Guatemala
*slight change in plans*
Some of you may have heard us talk about the incredible honeymoon to Portugal we had planned (some of you may have been innocently walking by when we hijacked you and told you every part in agonizing detail ????♀️). Unfortunately, Portugal isn’t allowing Americans (vaccinated or otherwise) into the country yet, so we have had to call a quick audible on the play and switch up our honeymoon destination. Fortunately, Covid has taught us how to roll with whatever’s going on in the moment, and to be grateful for each one…so we are wildly excited to tell you that we are going to be spending the first weeks as a married couple in Guatemala!
We fly into Guatemala City, where we spend the night so we can catch the morning flight to the island of Flores. We are spending 3 nights exploring the area, which is home to one of the largest discovered Mayan ruins, Tikal. We plan on walking the charming island town of Flores, set in the middle of Lake Peten and wandering through the neighboring nature reserve.
We will fly back to Guatemala City and immediately travel to stunning Lake Atitlan, where we will head to a little lake town called San Marcos La Laguna. There we will feast our little hippy hearts on all the yoga and vegan food we can handle, and take the time to connect with each other, and the beautiful Earth we live on.
To fully appreciate the diversity of Lake Atitlan, we will stay for a few days at Laguna Lodge, a vegetarian and eco-conscious lodge set on private nature reserve, where we can go on hikes, and visit other small lakeside villages only accessible by boat.
After our time at the lake, we will spend a few days in Antigua, the idyllic city that used to be the capital of Guatemala. Guatemala is known for its coffee and chocolate and we plan on indulging in both- whenever, and wherever.
Before we get too comfortable, we will find ourselves on the road again, but this time heading southwest to the Pacific Coast, where the little surf town of El Paredon lies. We’ve rented a bungalow near the black sand beach so we can spend our days surfing and driving ATVs through the lush rainforest.
After our fill of surf and sand, we will return to Antigua, to spend a little more time with the coffee and chocolate, and maybe hike a volcano to work off all that caffeine.
We spend the our last day in Guatemala back in Guatemala City, where we have appointments to get tattoos that will serve as a permanent reminder of our connection to each other, and of a honeymoon full of love and adventure.
The final night of our honeymoon is going to be spent in Houston, which we are excited to learn more about…because right now all we know is that there’s a vegan doughnut shop downtown. On second thought, do we really need to know more than that?
This wasn’t the first honeymoon we had planned on, and it actually wasn’t the second, either, but it’s the honeymoon we are supposed to experience and we can’t wait for the adventure to begin.
We are so grateful to be marrying someone who values traveling as highly as we do, and just as grateful to have people in our lives who support us a couple, and as individuals ❤️
