It all started freshman year of high school, 2013, at Shoreland Lutheran in Somers, WI. We both sat in the back of a Physical Science class. I, Kayla, sat attentively listening to the teacher while Ty goofed off in the back. Eventually, after a few flirtatious encounters, I took the initiative and told Tyler how I felt about him; much to my surprise, he reciprocated! We went on a very very awkward date with a third wheel friend to the zoo and then to Six Flags with two of his brothers.
Sadly, I moved away from Wisconsin to Washington state a few weeks after (perks of being a good ol' Navy brat). This probably would have been the end of our little high school fling. But God had bigger plans for us! Many long texts led to phone calls which led to video chats and soon we were inseparable. The distance wasn't damaging what we had; in fact, it made it stronger.
We visited each other as often as we could with the little time and money we had, but mostly we video chatted to keep in touch. Once we both graduated high school and decided where we would go to college, we were much closer than that 2,000-mile distance! We would only be 2.5 hours apart and could visit each other often.
5 years later on a surprise trip to visit my family in Washington State, Tyler proposed to me on Mount Rainier. We were one step closer to never being apart again. We both are so excited for that day to come!
For those friends and family who say, "How did you spend 7 years apart? That must have been so hard," we both have the same response. The only reason we are still together and strong is because of One who is greater than us. He brought us together and kept us together. How else could a girl from Tucson, AZ fall in love with a boy from East Troy, WI? That stuff doesn't just happen by chance!
