We are travelling to the beautiful Croatia where we will be spending 3 nights in the coastal city Dubrovnik which has massive 16th-century walls encircling an Old Town with Gothic and Renaissance buildings. We plan to catch some on the summer festival taking place around the city in the forms of concert’s and performances, along with visiting an arboretum built in 1502 by Dubrovnik noble Ivan Gučetić, the only one left that can be enjoyed in something approaching their original form. We also hope to go sea-kayaking seeing the city from a different perspective along with some of the local islands.
We then travel onto the Plivička lakes national park for 5 nights, the country’s most popular single natural attraction. The 8km string of sixteen lakes, hemmed in by densely forested hills, with water rushing down from the upper lakes via a sequence of waterfalls and cataracts. Here we hope to take in the natural beauty of the area whilst relaxing in the lakes and taking walks in the woods with the hope of catching a glimpse of the local wildlife such as deer, bears, wolves and wild boars.
From here we go onto Pula where we spend the majority of our time, 9 nights in a beach apartment, enjoying the local area and scenery. We hope to enjoy some day trips to visit Pula’s amphitheatre and local roman fort along with going truffle hunting in the wood around Motovun and Buzet one of Europe’s prime hunting grounds for truffles. We plan to do some Island hoping including veliki brijun which is the largest of the 14 small uninhabited islands which make up part of the Brijuni national park. Also on our list of things we would like to see is Romuald's Cave which is protected as the large bat habitat, artefacts of an early man were found in the cave as well as the remains of extinct animals such as lion, hyena or leopard.
