This entry is from our Expert Guest series where wedding and honeymoon professionals share their best tips on creating memories that last a lifetime.
Is a Sunday wedding for you? Typically, when couples begin their venue search they are planning for a Saturday wedding. It’s convenient, traditional and what most wedding guests are accustomed to.
However, sometimes you may fall in love with a venue that doesn’t have a Saturday available or the venue is just over your budget. In some cases, Sunday may be all that your venue has available in your dream wedding month.
That leaves you deciding whether or not a Sunday wedding can work for you and your loved one. When tackling this decision, here are some things we’d recommend considering. There are a lot of benefits and challenges to think about, and while some Sunday wedding details may pose a challenge to you, other couples may find them to be a benefit!
Overall, your decision should be based on what is best for you and your partner. Just remember- it’s YOUR big day so despite the opinions of friends and family, if Sunday is best for you, choose Sunday!
Why Choose a Sunday Wedding
The Discount
Often, even during peak season, venues offer a 10% discount on their packages for both Friday and Sunday weddings.
- If you are having a 175 person wedding, this adds up!
- With a per plate cost of $150 for your 175 person wedding, you save $2,625 in price and that is just on your venue.
- Some venues may even throw in incentives in order for you to book a Sunday. Maybe a raw bar for your cocktail hour or an extra dessert will be added to your package free of charge!
- Other vendors may offer discounts as well- an extra $2,000 can get you that photo booth you’ve been wanting plus more!
Your Guests’ Schedules
If you have a lot of guests who are traveling in for your wedding, you may want to consider how it will affect their plans.
- Some guests may consider a Sunday wedding challenging because they need to be at work Monday morning. However, others may be very excited to take a Monday off from work!
- Your close friends and family do not have to rush out of work on Friday to make a rehearsal dinner if you hold it on Saturday instead.
- If you are having your wedding in any kind of destination spot, like a beach area, traveling in on a Sunday puts traffic going in the opposite direction of your guests.
- Some people view Sunday as a time to spend with their significant others and children and may not want to attend a wedding because of this.
One Long Party
Having a Sunday wedding allows you to start the festivities on Saturday, giving you two full days to celebrate.
- While your rehearsal dinner may only be for close friends and family, you may want to add a day time activity for guests to participate in during the day.
- After your rehearsal, you can invite a larger group out for welcome drinks
- Often Sunday weddings start a little earlier in the day, allowing you to continue your wedding into an after party with a more manageable time.
- Given that many people are returning to work on Monday, you likely wouldn’t have many people attending a post wedding brunch.
A Casual Affair
A Sunday wedding tends to be viewed as a little more casual and often occurs earlier in the day- as a late lunch or even brunch affair.
- If you are looking for something a little more casual, a Sunday wedding can allow for that more relaxed less formal feeling.
- Guests who have to go to work on Monday might be a little more reserved with their drinking, leading to a less energetic atmosphere.
Timing Things Out
It’s important to put some thought behind how your day’s schedule would look with a Sunday wedding in place.
- If your venue has a Saturday wedding, you may need to have your actual rehearsal on Friday or right before your actual ceremony.
- Depending on the venue, if a wedding took place on Saturday night, you and your wedding party may not be able to get into the venue until a little later in the day
- An earlier start to your wedding means an earlier start to your day. If you are thinking about doing a first look, you and your wedding party better be morning people!
- Appointments for things like hair and makeup may have more availability on a Sunday than Friday or Saturday
In the end after you and your fiancé weight the pros and cons, decide if a Sunday wedding is right for you! No matter what day it is your friends and family will be excited to share in such a special moment and memory alongside you.
