If you’ve been married for 50 years, then I salute you. Five decades of marriage to your husband or wife is a significant accomplishment that deserves recognition. From your family, your friends, and especially each other. Nothing shows your appreciation to your hubby or wife better than surprising them with a special anniversary gift that’s out of this world.

But what do you give the love of your life who has stood by your side through thick and thin? Another piece of jewelry? An excellent bottle of wine?

No. You give your spouse the priceless gift of travel and adventure. How about a destination you’ve always wanted to visit or an activity you’ve both been dreaming of doing?

Choose from one of these ideas for exciting bucket list adventures for the anniversary gift of a lifetime.

Ancient Inca city

Great Ideas For 50th Anniversary Trips

Trekking the ‘Lost City of the Incas’ at Machu Picchu

This one’s for the fit married couple!

A once-in-a-lifetime, truly unforgettable experience, Machu Picchu offers a world of discovery and breathtaking views. The Incan citadel is set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2007 it was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and continued to attract thousands of intrepid travelers every year.

If you’re a pair of avid hikers, then this is the perfect way to celebrate your 50th wedding anniversary. While it is one of the all-time greatest treks to one of the world’s great wonders, be warned – Machu Picchu is ridden with grueling climbs at high altitude, which reduces many visitors to cramps and nausea.

But don’t let this stop you!

Nowadays there are private tailor-made tours for seniors. From the Inca Trail to the Salkantay, Lares, and Vilcabamba, there are various hikes for varying levels of fitness. Witnessing the sunset on top of hilltop ruins of the ‘Lost City of the Incas’ with your spouse promises to be a romantic moment you won’t forget.

Sleep Under the Stars in NamibRand, Namibia

If you have a passion for stargazing and mind-blowing celestial views, then this lesser-known secret is the bucket list adventure for you.

Situated in a desert in Southwestern Namibia, NamibRand Nature Reserve is one of only 11 gold-certified Dark Sky Reserves in the world. What does that mean? It means that it is one of the least light-polluted areas in the world, making it the perfect spot for a romantic stargazing safari vacation.

The 170,000-hectare private reserve is also home to epic landscapes of massive apricot dunes and grassy plains peppered with mysterious fairy circles. Yes, fairy circles. Along the edge of the Namib Desert, there are thousands of small circles dotted around on the ground, in which nothing grows. Scientists have their theories, but no one knows for sure why they’re there.

Yet another reason to add this to your 50th wedding anniversary bucket list (as if you needed one) is the firm limit on the number of tourists in the nature reserve. Strict rules state that the total number of guest beds in the sanctuary is restricted to one bed per 1000 hectares, with a limit of only 20 beds in any one spot. You can much guarantee you won’t be bumping into hordes of tourists.

World class star gazing, mysterious natural phenomenon, and some serious privacy. Now that’s what I call an adventure.

Bagpipers in Scotland

Experience the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Visiting the beautiful city of Edinburgh is a must-do bucket list for all couples who love travel. Visiting this historic city during Festival Fringe? Now that’s a bucket list adventure for a special occasion!

The three-week spectacular event turns the Scottish capital into the single most significant celebration of arts and culture on the planet, featuring more than 55 000 performances. From world-class theatre to great music, to hilarious comedy, the 25-day festival is the world’s largest platform for creative freedom. And that’s not something to be missed.

So get your tartan on, grab a whiskey, and let the infectious pride of Scotland take over!

Aurora borealis in Alaska

Witness the Beauty of the Northern Lights

The thrill of viewing the magic of the Northern Lights is on every good bucket list out there. And for a good reason.

Nature’s most spectacular light show, the Aurora Borealis is visible on roughly 200 nights a year in the icy Finnish Lapland. Experience the adventure of a lifetime, cuddling up among the crisp winter air. Gaze up at the night sky to witness flickering curtains of green, red yellow and blue colors dancing on the night sky; one of nature’s most spectacular phenomenons.

While you’re there, there is plenty of other exciting bucket list type of activities to be had. Why not get the blood pumping with some cross-country skiing or a ride on a traditional dog sled. After fifty years of marriage, you deserve all the fun-filled adventure in the world!
