Our Story:
“What do you think about Rachel?”
“I like the cut of her jib.”
“What does that mean?”
“I think it’s pirate lingo. It means I think she’s good at her job.”
That was the first thing I ever said about my future wife. I was the Kitchen Manager of The Original Brooklyn Pizza in Lexington, KY. A self-proclaimed genius with a chip on my shoulder the size of Texas, my main focus was to continue to grow in my career. As a result, the first impression I had of anyone was how much value they brought to the table for the business. With Rachel, that was no different. A beautiful young woman to be sure, but she was a damn good server and that was what caught my eye first.
That impression didn’t stay professional for long. From the toothbrush I saved for her in hopes she’d be back, to learning to survive with no AC, to a collection of incredibly interesting roommates, to one very large and very sassy hippopotamus, the first chapter of our story was rarely boring. And after an unbelievable whirlwind of experiences, frustrating moments, cherished memories, a lot of Waffle House, and a deeper connection than I ever thought was possible to have with another person, on July 3rd, 2019 I made the smartest decision of my life. I handed a ring to the woman I would spend the rest of my days with.
We would have the wedding of our dreams. Not just a large vanity party, but a special moment to connect and share with loved ones. Family and friends that we haven’t seen in years, and some we may never see again with the randomness of life. It would be a moment we would remember for the rest of our lives, and we eagerly set our date (and booked our venue and caterer) for August 29th, 2020.
2020.
A year to be remembered to be sure, and for all the wrong reasons. In the very beginning of the pandemic we weren't sure if we would be able to have our wedding as planned, but as time marched forward concern for our loved ones took over and we made the heart breaking decision to postpone our celebration. We faced setback after setback. Financial difficulty after difficulty. “Excellent” credit turned into “Needs Work” and then into “No Longer Worth Checking The App”. It was the hardest time of our lives, but we are grateful that we, along with our friends and family, made it through with our health.
In 2021, we lived apart as Rachel took her dream to Jonesboro, Arkansas, with a new position at work, where she has been crushing it. I supported her all the way, but the time apart was too much emotionally and financially, and our family reunited in Arkansas in October of 2021, where we’ve been since.
Our experience in 2020 was devastating, but it isn’t unique. We may not deserve a handout just for surviving the pandemic, and we may not deserve anything from you at all. This year we are asking that instead of wedding gifts, you help us create memories to last a lifetime, and to create an experience with friends and family, and to reconnect loved ones scattered across the country for a brief evening of companionship. To give my wife the wedding she deserves. Thank you for your time in reading this and sharing a couple of nice memories, I’m grateful for even that.
Love,
Chris and Rachel
