More Information

Preparing for High Altitude Weddings in The Rocky Mountains I hope you're getting so excited for our big wedding adventure in the mountains. The Nurse in me wants to check in and share some tips for being at high altitudes in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Since Mark and I will be getting married in the Rocky Mountains, you can guarantee to be anywhere from 7,000-12,000 feet above sea level. If you live at sea level, this can be shocking to the body. Oftentimes, you will change elevations throughout the day, depending on the activities we are doing throughout our time in Vail, so you should prepare for a variety of changing elevations. As you know, Mark and I will be saying “I Do!” at Clinton Gulch Dam Reservoir, which is approximately 11,075 feet elevation. We will all be staying at a VRBO in East Vail that is 8,379 feet elevation. Altitude sickness comes on quickly and it is no joke. Symptoms of altitude sickness include headache, shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, and oftentimes vomiting. Depending on the severity, some people with altitude sickness may need to be hospitalized to replenish their fluids and oftentimes the only treatment is to immediately head to a lower elevation. I have seen the hospitalization of HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema) many times in my ICU from people quickly traveling (and not yet acclimated) from sea level to this elevation and want to keep my family and friends safe. I will need your help with this. However, if you prepare adequately, you lessen your chances of getting altitude sickness greatly and will have a fun time. Tips for being apart of Weddings at High Altitudes: • Be sure to arrive a few days early to acclimate (most of you will be flying straight to Vail. Making sure you have time in your travel schedule to allow for the adjustment to elevations is essential. • Get hydrated NOW!! Drink lots of water everyday this week before you start traveling. I mean A LOT of water. Also, drink plenty of water while here in Vail. We will be prepared and have plenty of water at the VRBO throughout your stay. • Add electrolytes like Liquid IV, Nuun, or Gatorade/ Pedialyte. • Make sure you eat! Bring plenty of snacks with you. We will have snacks and food at VRBO. • Avoid excess alcohol. We like to say that one drink at a high altitude is like 3 drinks at home, so make sure you aren't over-indulging before the big day because hangovers in the mountains are not fun. Drink water between each drink. • Consider carrying portable oxygen canisters, especially if you know you’re sensitive to altitude changes. Gas stations and grocery stores all generally carry these in the mountains so they're super easy to find! • Have over-the-counter medications like Ibuprofen ready to help ease symptoms. • Avoid spending prolonged periods outside in the sun while you are acclimatizing. Though it may feel colder in the mountains, you are much closer to the sun and can easily suffer heat exhaustion. • Don't jump right into strenuous activity. Instead, gradually add exercise and activity while you are getting used to the elevation. • Prepare ahead of time with exercise and healthy eating, and hydrating with A LOT of water before you leave! • Have proper footwear, layers, and gear ready. Packing lists will go out today too! • Be ready for changes in weather. The mountains are notorious for wind, afternoon snow storms, and sudden dips in temperature! Having a wedding in the mountains is beautiful and ensuring everyone is prepared for the high-altitude wedding will make it the absolute best time!
