More Information
To Do in Anchorage: -Potter Marsh Boardwalk - lots of birds here and you'll probably see a moose! -Alaska Zoo - Animals! -Anchorage Museum - Always a great place to learn about Alaska/Anchorage History -Alaska Native Heritage Center - Lots of information about Native Alaskans -Alaska Photo Treks - Different tours available for those wanting to learn more about photography and see some random places you might not find on your own. -Salmonberry Tours - All sorts of different tours can be arranged through them all over the region. -Lake Hood Seaplane Base - Go watch planes come and go at the busiest seaplane base in the world. We suggest parking near the Alaska DOT building near the International Airport. -Coastal Trail Bicycle Tour - Various Outfitters and Guides -Glen Alps/Flattop Trailhead. This is the best hiking and biking access near the city of Anchorage - starting at about 2000 feet, you can climb easy mountains, bike easy trails, or just walk on a mellow valley trail. Also a nice overlook to see the city, Denali, and 3 volcanoes (if it's a nice day). Climb Flattop, Ship Lake Pass hike, Little O'Malley Peak climb, Hidden Lakes hike, and Ptarmigan Pass hike are our favorites. -Flight-seeing with Rusts, Regal Air, Trail Ridge Air. Or go big and fly with them to a remote bear viewing camp 1-2 hours west of Anchorage. You won't regret it! -Eklutna Lake. Beautiful glacial fed lake about 45 minutes from Anchorage. Nice mellow hiking and lakeside biking trails, canoe and bike rentals available. Food In Anchorage: -Moose's Tooth for the best beer and pizza in the state.. don't miss it. Seriously.. gotta go here. -Glacier Brewhouse for normal variety fare -Orso for fancier stuff (right next to glacier brewhouse) -Snow City for the best breakfast in town (make a reservation if you can) -Spenard Roadhouse for good sandwiches, creative dinner dishes, beer, mixed drinks, etc. -Southside Bistro - wide variety of consistent and fresh food -South Restaurant - Beat the lines and wait at Snow City for equally good food! Same owners -Ginger - Smart Asian/American/Alaskan Fusion restaurant -Club Paris - Steaks and French dips in a low-light old school atmosphere To Do in the Girdwood to Seward Corridor: -Check out the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in Portage just south of Girdwood. -Hike up to Crow Pass (2 hours one way, all uphill on the way) for the most beautiful views you can imagine from a hike.. (Girdwood) -White Water raft 6 Mile Creek (various guides/outfitters available) (near Girdwood) -Helicopter tour or dogsled experience with Alpine Air (Girdwood) -Girdwood Mushing Company - Dryland (no snow or glacier) tour of a real dog kennel from an Iditarod Racer. -Ice climbing with Ascending Path (Girdwood) -Hike the Winner Creek Trail (super easy, grade 1 hiking..) (Girdwood) -Virgin Creek Falls Hike -Crow Pass Hike - Probably best bang for your buck hike around the Anchorage area. Don't attempt before June 15th - lots of snow. One of our favorites. -Visit Crow Creek Mine (Girdwood) -26 Glacier cruise out of Whittier. You'll see both whales and glaciers. -Multiple fishing charter and sea kayak trips available out of Whittier. Google and check reviews and prices. -Train ride on the Alaska Railroad - you travel from Portage to the Spencer Glacier where you can hike around and explore.-Girdwood Mushing Company - Dryland (no snow or glacier) tour of a real dog kennel from an Iditarod Racer. -Go deep sea fishing out of Whittier or Seward. Catch a huge halibut or salmon. See wildlife from the boat. Crazy Rays Adventures in Whittier has a good reputation. -Seward whale watching and tour options: Major Marine, Alan Marine, Kenai Fjords Tours all do a good job. -For river fishing, we have no specific suggestions, but there are multiple guides out of Cooper Landing on the Kenai River. Any one of these should be pretty good. Points North: Palmer, Wasilla, Hatcher Pass, etc. -Outbound Helicopter Adventures - Helicopter tour agency. See a glacier! See mountains. Gorgeous area they fly. -Alaska Backcountry Adventure Tours - Snowmobiles in winter, ATV's in summer - ride to the Knik Glacier! -Hatcher Pass area. Excellent hiking options, historic gold mine ruins and relics. Google Hatcher Pass hikes and pick something like Reed Lakes for the best views and most spectacular mountains. -Matanuska Glacier. A bit of a drive from Anchorage (2.5 hours) but after a 20'ish minute walk, you'll be on the glacier and able to explore the crazy blues and whites. Lots of people, sort of a mess of people sometimes, or at the very least, a muddy mess when you return to the car. Bring boots and trash bags! -Talkeetna. Cute little funky town 2.5 hours north of Anchorage. Not much to do here - there's a good Jetboat tour company, and some flight-seeing options to go see Denali - try K2 or Talkeetna Air Taxi. A few great restaurants and one of our favorite breweries - Denali Brewing.
