More Information

Once upon a time, in the quiet unfolding of childhood, destiny gently placed two lives on the same path, long before either would know what the story would become... In 2003, within the halls of St. Joseph’s School, Joi and Khalim met for the very first time. Joi had been a student there since first grade, while Khalim arrived that year after his mother, Kia, realized his previous school was not where he was meant to thrive. Guided by family wisdom and care, encouraged by Khalim’s Aunt Kenya, whose son Kain already attended the school; Khalim found himself stepping into a place that would unknowingly shape his future. That year, something quiet and unspoken lingered between them. Each held a small, innocent crush, though neither understood it then. Khalim thought Joi was a little mean, while Joi simply found Khalim annoying in that familiar, childhood way: tiny misunderstandings that felt important at the time, leaving behind sparks neither could name. The following year, Khalim was gone, and the story paused patient, waiting for the right moment to continue. Five years later, in 2009, fate turned the page. On a lively night at Night Craze, Joi stood talking with her best friend, Alize, when her eyes were drawn across the room to a familiar presence: a young man with brown skin, striking green eyes, and curly hair catching the light. Her heart stirred with recognition. “LiLi!” Joi exclaimed, grabbing Alize’s arm. “I think that’s this boy Khalim I went to school with in third grade!” With calm certainty, Alize replied, “That is Khalim.” Before hesitation could settle in, Joi crossed the room. “Hi Khalim! I’m Joi from St. Joe’s—we went to school together in the third grade. Do you remember me?” He answered simply, “No.” Though she would later learn this wasn’t true, Joi laughed it off. What followed was easy and natural; numbers exchanged, conversations flowing, and the beginning of a friendship that would quietly anchor them both for years to come. Time moved forward, weaving its way through growing pains and changing seasons. They dated other people, followed their own paths, and lived their lives, but through it all, Joi and Khalim remained a steady source of comfort for one another. No matter where life led them, they always returned to each other’s voices, support, and understanding. During Khalim’s college years, he asked Joi to accompany him to a play, an assignment for his class. What Joi did not know was that Khalim’s feelings had been slowly, faithfully growing over time. As the play unfolded, Khalim reached for Joi’s hand. She did not pull away. In that quiet moment, Joi’s thoughts raced, her heart questioning what her mind could not yet name. And so began a slow burn, the kind of love that takes its time, built on friendship, trust and years of knowing. It was not until Joi moved away from Buffalo to Washington, D.C., that distance revealed the truth. Away from home, Joi realized that the person she missed most, the one she wanted to talk to, to be near, to share her days with, was Khalim. In 2018, she told him how she felt. Khalim didn’t believe her at first, and Joi insisted. He questioned and she stood firm. Back and forth they went, hearts circling what had always been there, until the weight of unspoken truth gently strained the friendship they both held dear. Then came December 31, 2019. By that time, Khalim had moved to New York City. As the year came to a close, he sent Joi a message wishing her a Happy New Year...and then added words that changed everything: he wished she were with him. Joi didn’t hesitate. She stepped away from the noise of the club, into the quiet of a bathroom, and called him. “Are you serious?” she asked. He was. “Okay,” Joi said. “I’m going to look at buses or the train.” Her friends were stunned—caught between disbelief and amazement as they watched the moment unfold. None of them quite believed what was happening, yet before doubt could take hold, they drove Joi from the club straight to the station, still shaking their heads in awe. By the next morning, January 1st, 2020, Joi stood on Khalim’s doorstep in New York City. And it was there, at the dawn of a new decade, that their love story truly began; not by chance, but by choice, courage and the quiet certainty that some hearts are destined to find each other again.
